Tourist attractions

The municipality of Trujillo has a wide variety of tourist attractions among the most relevant: In recent years there has been a strong investment in tourist developments, the most important being the development of Campa Vista, and currently the possible construction of a Cruise dock, which is a project that should be carefully analyzed from an environmental point of view.

Capiro and Calentura National Park

The national park is located on the south side of the city of Trujillo, department of Colón, it has an area of approximately 62 square kilometers with a core zone of 49.4 square kilometers; The highest point of Cerro Calentura is 1,235 meters above sea level and has an impressive view of Trujillo Bay and other important sites (Castilla, Trujillo urban area, etc.).

It was declared a protected area in 1992 according to the presidential agreement (No. 1118-92). Hiking, Camping, Bird Watching.

Trujillo Bay: It is truly spectacular. With the old Spanish fortress and its cannons strategically placed in the ravine, the wide crescent-shaped beach and the volcano-like mountain looming behind the town, the setting couldn’t be better. It is a tropical paradise. The beach below the town center has very soft sand. You can choose a champa and alternate between sunbathing or enjoying the shade. Buy a typical «petate» in one of the tourist shops in town, and lie down comfortably on the beach in it. If you are lucky enough to find a spot in the shade or a hammock, you could spend the whole day there.

On the beach, in the direction of the airport, are located the Bahía Bar and Gringos, which are more popular and exclusive.

The Garifuna, proud of their Afro-Caribbean origins, jealously preserve their folklore and language. Trujillo also offers tourism good restaurants and entertainment centers on the beach, where you can enjoy rich seafood dishes, such as «Restaurante Granada», «Pankry» as well as large hotels such as «Christopher Colombus», «Bahía Blue”, “Colonial” and others. Boat rides, Snorkeling, Banco de Estrellas

Another very important aspect for tourism is its panoramic viewpoints, such as Hotel Villas Brinkley, from where you can appreciate the beauty of its clean bay at its best.

From the viewpoint of «Hotel Villas Brinkley» the visitor can get the best panoramic view of the impressive Bay of Trujillo, Colón.

Bird watching:

Bird watching can be very rewarding in the Trujillo area. In Villa Vista Dorada, located above the Río Cristales ravine, between 5:30 and 7:30 in the morning, at least 4 different parrots have been identified (including the yellow-naped parakeet that supposedly is only found in the Bay Islands), blue-gray tanagers, variegated hummingbirds (perhaps the Emerald—but not confirmed), keel-billed toucans, and countless others flying below the terrace. In the winter, all the transient migratory birds from the north are present, in addition to the local birds.

The museum:

In the place known as «Riveras del Pedregal» is the museum of Don Rufino Galán, highlighting in its collection interesting pre-Hispanic and colonial pieces and the strangest thing is that it has its own little pool formed by a stream. Every year it is visited by thousands of people.

Strength:

The Santa Bárbara fortress still dominates the bay from the top of its ravine. Paying a small entrance fee will secure you a spot with an unrivaled view of the bay from which you can take photos. If you have the penchant for collecting old Caribbean prints, there is an engraving of Trujillo done by the intrepid Dutch artist, Ogilby, in 1671. It shows a larger fortification than exists today where the walls extend down almost to the sea level at the eastern entrance of the town. This fort has been declared a National Historical Monument and Patrimony of the Republic of Honduras, through Government Agreement No. 049, dated March 8, 1990, the building became the property and care of the IHAH in 1997. The Santa Bárbara Fortress Also known as «El Castillo», it is the first built for military purposes by the Spanish colonists in the country.

Historical buildings:

Colonial history is full of battles, fires, and pirate invasions. This left as a legacy a Spanish, English and French architecture, such as THE FORTRESS OF SANTA BARBARA, THE CATHEDRAL CHURCH and the set of wooden buildings that.
