In 1918, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day, in the eleventh month, after four years of cruel war, a ceasefire agreement known as the ‘armistice’ was signed in Rethondes, France, ending the First World War. . . The “war to end all wars” ended. More than 10 million lives had been lost forever.
Hailing the end of the war, President Woodrow Wilson said:
“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the service of their country, and with gratitude for the victory, both because of that thing of which they have told us. released, and also to the opportunity they have given America to demonstrate its sympathy with peace and justice in the council of nations.”
