Tourist Attractions
La Ceiba has the potential to become the Eco-tourism Capital of Central America. Its proximity to the Pico Bonito National Park, the largest national park in the national territory, as well as the Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge and the Cayos Cochinos National Marine Park are part of the tourist proposal offered by this beautiful municipality.
Beaches: The beaches of the Caribbean Sea in La Ceiba, constitute another very attractive point, they border the entire northern part of the city and a few minutes away are the beaches of Peru and El Porvenir, as well as those of Corozal and Zambo Creek where the Garífuna populations that preserve their Afro-Caribbean language and culture.
Río María: A short and refreshing trip only 8 km from La Ceiba, this small village is very close to the beaches of Peru, on the highway that goes to Trujillo.
Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge: This reserve, a national park, is located 33 km from La Ceiba on the Caribbean coast with a triangle-shaped area formed by the Cuero and Salado rivers on the coast. With an area of 13,255 hectares, it was declared a protected zone in 1986, due to its manatee population being in danger of extinction.
Cangrejal River Rafting: One of the best white water rafting in Central America can be found in La Ceiba. The Cangrejal river offers class 2, 3 and 4 rapids, all just a short 45-minute drive from the center of La Ceiba and as if this were not enough, you can add Pico Bonito, a park with 7 different ecosystems, all due to the change of altitude on the eastern side of the river, offering you a fascinating reality of the tropical jungle of Honduras.
Museum of Butterflies and other Insects: This is the largest private museum in Honduras, with insects collected by Mr. Robert Lehmann for more than 30 years; Here are more than 11,000 specimens that include: 2,200 specimens of Honduran butterflies, 2,400 exotic insects from Honduras, scorpions, tarantulas, centipedes, millipedes, beetles, and the African Emperor Scorpion (the largest scorpion in the world). More than 9,000 of the specimens are native to Honduras.
Pico Bonito National Park: The most diverse National Park in Honduras covering an area of land that goes from sea level to 7,300 feet above sea level with the greatest variation in elevation in Honduras. It has been named Pico Bonito for its layout and has become a sign of La Ceiba in the important role it has played in eco-tourism as a destination in recent years.
