The municipality of Iriona is located on the Caribbean coastal plain, in the Sico or Tinto Negro River basin, 2 meters above sea level. It is the easternmost municipality of the Department of Colon.

Iriona is a municipality that presents high biodiversity, it has great ecotourism potential due to its natural wealth, an example of this is that this municipality includes part of the Río Plátano Biosphere, which is important not only locally, but also nationally and internationally. for its production of oxygen, biodiversity of species and cultures.

Of the core zone of the Biosphere, 56% (117,648 hectares) correspond to the Municipality of Iriona and of the buffer zones of the Reserve (Cultural Zone and Buffer Zone) it has 13% of the Biosphere (76,821 hectares). Declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982 and area under special regime. In addition to this, the area is in the process of being declared a National Park, as a Sierra Río Tinto Zone, so this municipality has a high environmental impact, not only nationally but worldwide.
